Working under the nifty mononym FELIVAND, Brisbane multi-hyphenate Felicity Vanderveen brings a warm production touch and breezy vocal finesse to her enthralling take on neo-soul. Her 2022 debut album, Ties, feels personal and homemade, despite its burnished arrangements and dynamic flourishes. That doesn’t mean the same year’s Apple Music Home Session was redundant—only that it repositioned her poignant voice and trusty keys within even more open space. And several notable guests do stop by Ties, including outside producers Tristan Hoogland, Ed Quinn and Maxwell Byrne. Despite FELIVAND’s rewarding integration of electronics into her work, she stripped much of the original club-pop elements from Troye Sivan’s giddy hit “Rush” for her 2023 live cover for triple j’s Like a Version series, making it sound more like a revived jazz standard. The dreamy indie-pop edge she displays on such tracks as “Lately”, meanwhile, have earned her support slots for Soccer Mommy and Boy & Bear alike.
