If taken as a command, the title of Armin van Buuren’s ninth album is a good reminder to anyone, especially those engaged in rigorous activity: Breathe. “Exercise is a great form of stress relief and helps achieve balance, both physically and mentally,” the Dutch trance pioneer tells Apple Music. Breathe is a guest-packed, 51-track shot of caffeine, and he includes a number of its tracks in his Apple Music Fitness Mix. “I designed this mix to not only inspire others to get into regular exercise, but also to double as a proper soundtrack for those workout sessions,” he says. “It immediately gives a kick of energy, setting the mood, and only rises in tempo and intensity—a great way for those exercising to push themselves to the limit.” By the end of the set, “‘Late at Night’, by Lilly Palmer and Maddix, has that drive that helps achieve that last set or round when fatigue has kicked in,” van Buuren says. “I also love ‘Taking Back Control’ by Adam Beyer. It comes in at that moment in a session where the first bit of tiredness bubbles up and, consequently, when the mind starts thinking about perhaps cutting a session short. This track—in sound and title—does an amazing job of replenishing the energy and motivation, and pulling focus back to the goal.”
